About us
The MEND Programme has been developed by leading experts
in the field of childhood obesity. It combines all the elements
known to be vital in treating and preventing overweight / obesity
in children and their families.
In September 2002, a highly successful MEND feasibility trial was carried out, demonstrating that the programme worked. Parents were impressed with their children's reductions in waist sizes, improved self -esteem levels, increased fitness and other statistically significant results.
Since then MEND has achieved further scientific recognition when the feasibility trial results were written up in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics in January 2005 - demonstrating its potential as a successful obesity treatment and prevention programme.
The research, in the form of a full-scale Randomised Control Trial (RCT) took place at the Institute of Child Health at Great Ormond Street Hospital and was supported by the Department of Health
MEND is now hoping to conduct a much larger study over a longer term to see if these changes continue to be sustained and/or improved at longer periods than a year.
At MEND we believe that we can be part of the solution to meet or exceed the Government's obesity targets. Since the initial pilot we have:
- Developed and refined the MEND Programme (a 10 week course of 20 two-hour sessions) for overweight / obese children and their families
- Written a training manual and developed the capability to support the roll-out of a large number of MEND Programmes
- Published a book based on the MEND Principles - From Kid to Superkid
