Why the MEND Programme works

Being overweight can be tough for children both physically and emotionally. Caring for an overweight or obese child can be difficult too, especially if they lack confidence or feel depressed because of their size.

On the MEND Programme, children and parents meet others who are in a very similar position. Over the 10 weeks they form their own supportive network and make new friends.

In a friendly, safe and stimulating environment we provide simple and practical healthy eating advice. We work through different topics to help children and families learn how to make healthier choices when shopping, cooking, preparing meals and eating out. We also run a special supermarket tour. We play lots of lively, interactive educational games with the children to help them put what they are learning into practice.

We show families how to make lasting changes to their eating and activity with clever techniques that they can practice at home. Special activities help to improve children’s self-esteem and encourage them to make healthier choices for themselves.

The physical activity part of the Programme is specifically designed to appeal to children who may find exercise daunting. We show them enjoyable, informal ways of getting moving, removing the competitive element. Children build up their fitness levels, strength and agility gradually.

Most importantly, everyone celebrates each other’s success at the end of the MEND Programme with a special graduation event.

If you choose to enrol, the expert advice and support you’ll receive will help you and your child begin to enjoy the amazing benefits of following a healthier lifestyle. To find out more about families’ experiences on the MEND Programme, click here.
